Last year I made candied Cheetos and they were a huge hit. Multiple people asked me for the recipe and talked about them. A lot.
This led me to plan candied Fritos for this year.
Salt, sweet. Sounds like a match made in Cookie Thursday is a Thing heaven.
But I found 2 recipes for candied Fritos. One used peanut butter and 2 different kinds of chocolate chips. The other used sugar, butter, corn syrup, aka caramel.
I decided to try them both.
I made the chocolate chips/peanut butter one first. I made it early this morning but the chocolate would not reset. Even after it being left to dry for 3 hours.
Highly unusual.
The chocolate was more of a taffy consistency. And messy.
While that first batch was drying, I made the second batch. And this caramel coating worked just like it had last year.
By the time I was packing up the CTIAT treats to take to the hospital, the chocolate peanut Fritos remained tacky and messy. I tried cutting the mass of Fritos, white chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and peanut butter into bars. But, still, no go.
Another failed experiment.
But I still had the caramel Fritos to tote to the hospital.
Unfortunately the other one went into the trash. Through the entire drying period, the Fritos had become stale? Water logged? Whatever the description, they were no longer crisp and the mouthfeel was no longer enjoyable. Into the trash they went. The whole batch.
Sigh.
That’s the thing about weekly cookies.
Sometimes a batch is not worthy.
But hey! At least I had a backup ready to go.
