And what is best about breaking the day? Besides the dawn after the night?
Breakfast.
A couple of years ago I wrote a post about Cornflakes and the cereal revolution that followed.
Every company wanted to vie to get the family out of bed and in the best shape to greet the day. Either to go to work, to make the home, or to go to school. A good breakfast was deemed essential.
Grape-Nuts was not the first cereal ever created. That honor goes to the cornflake. The cornflake was invented in 1894 by Will Kellogg at his sanitarium.
And the cereal wars were off!
C.W. Post created the Grape-Nuts in 1897. Originally made of flour, salt, and dried yeast, it was baked in a sheet. To be broken up and run through a coffee grinder. It was hardy stuff, and could be used by explorers as part of their kit in the 1920s.
I personally love Grape-Nuts and make sure to always have a box on hand.
Dot loves Grape-Nuts too. As long as the nuts have been soaking in milk and they are soft.
The recipe I have calls for zero cinnamon. None. The only spices in it are nutmeg and salt. I was a little skeptical until I tasted my first cookie. It has a charming mouthfeel, the warmness of the nutmeg, and the crunch of the cereal that certainly didn’t soften in the batter. Even with the addition of 1/4 c milk.
Bringing it back to the theme of the month, a cereal cookie is the first make as part of a balanced breakfast.

Yes, this is a well known song from the musical Hair!. The musical debuted in 1967 and the pop singer Oliver covered it in its most well known version in 1969.
The rest of the lyric of the first verse finishes with

Good morning, Starshine!”.
And if that isn’t the attitude for getting up and getting ready for school, I don’t know what is.
